FAQ Power’nGo EcoBOOSTER AC-800
- 1. Which batteries can be “recharged” with the EcoBOOSTER?
The EcoBOOSTER AC-900 allows you to “recharge” disposable ALKALINE batteries as well as NiMH (nickel- metal hydride) cells … even together. It is possible to charge 3 battery sizes in the following combinations: 1 to 4 batteries of sizes AA or AAA, but also 1 to 2 batteries of size C.
It is possible to charge max. 4 batteries of different sizes at the same time in every possible combination. However, it is important to always place the C cells (1 or 2 pcs) in the far left and/or far right battery compartments. The EcoBOOSTER will not recharge batteries with limited charge retention capacity for being too old, exhausted or defective. This is an important function to prevent ‘fake recharge’ .
- 2. How does the EcoBOOSTER work?
After you insert the batteries, the EcoBOOSTER automatically monitors the chemistry (ALKALINE/NiMH), capacity, condition, internal resistance, voltage and temperature of each battery. In case of a bad battery condition, the battery will not be charged.
The LED indicators visualize the condition of the battery, regular charging and end of the charging process.
The pulse charging current and the charging process of batteries in good condition are constantly regulated according to the prior analysis and complex algorithms. This allows for ideal and safe charging conditions. The charging status and the temperature of each battery are constantly monitored.
- 3. Can I really “recharge” an ALKALINE battery?
The EcoBOOSTER does not “recharge” ALKALINE batteries in the actual sense of the word because only NiMH cells make a reversible charging and discharging process possible. He renews, recycles, rejuvenates, boosts ALKALINE batteries which reconstitutes them up to 20 times and more, depending on their condition.
- 4. The EcoBOOSTER… boosts an ALKALINE battery?
First it is important to know how an ALKALINE battery works. When a battery is connected to a device, a chemical reaction will occur creating electric current by the flow of electrons from the – to + pole. Each electron supplies a certain amount of energy.
The potential chemical energy of the battery will decrease after each movement of an electron. The battery will stop working when this constant flow of electrons (= voltage) reaches completion (= chemical equilibrium). However, the chemical substances inside the ALKALINE battery will not be entirely used up.
The EcoBOOSTER makes it possible to reactivate, up to 20 times, the available active chemical substances of ALKALINE batteries.
Tests show a high power absorption and power retention of the cells after recharging with the EcoBOOSTER.
- 5. How to get more charging cycles from ALKALINE batteries?
It is important to prevent deep discharging and a long storage period of the ALKALINE batteries in discharged condition. As soon as the decrease in battery’s capacity becomes noticeable the battery should be recharged, e.g. slowing down of toy functions, weak light output of a torch, … (for more information, please consult the manual).
- 6. When does the EcoBOOSTER cut off the charging process?
The charging process is automatically cut off when the microprocessor detects full battery charge or when the safety timers reach the maximum charging time. For ALKALINE, the safety timer terminates charging after 4 hours, for NiMH cells after 12 hours (see also average charging times). When the battery temperature is too high, the charging will be temporarily interrupted as well.
- 7. Which are the average charging times?
The charging times for rechargeable batteries highly depend on the capacity of the battery. Moreover, the EcoBOOSTER does not have a constant charging current (but a pulse charging current), which explains the approximate nature of the charging times.
The LED indicators show when the batteries are ready for use. - 8. ALKALINE or NiMH batteries?
From an ecological and economical point of view, rechargeable NiMH cells remain without any doubt the best choice. The higher the energy consumption of a device, the higher the benefits of NiMH cells.
